Recently, the Swedish payment giant Klarna officially introduced an instant peer-to-peer (P2P) payment feature across 13 European nations, representing another advancement in its evolution toward digital banking. This new capability enables users to send money directly to friends or family through the application, whether for bill splitting or cash gifting.
The rollout strengthens Klarna's position in everyday financial services, further establishing itself as a hub for daily spending and money management. This move comes on the heels of the rapid expansion of Klarna Balance Accounts and the Klarna Card, which garnered over four million registrations within just four months of launch.
The firm attributes the swift adoption of its card to consumer frustration with traditional banks' operational friction and service charges. The P2P addition will streamline personal finance management, particularly for small transfers, rendering payments and fund control more efficient, convenient, and economical.
To utilize the P2P feature, users may identify recipients via phone numbers, emails, QR codes, or stored contacts. After amount confirmation, the system performs fraud prevention and qualification verification before executing the transfer. Presently, transactions are limited to Klarna users, though expansion to non-users and international remittances is anticipated soon.
Despite external perceptions that this development might pit Klarna against Nordic mobile payment specialists Vipps and Swish, the company refutes such notions. It stresses that inter-account transfers are standard banking fare and expresses its intention to maintain compatibility with both Swish and Vipps for customer benefit.
Moreover, while current P2P operations rely on conventional banking infrastructure, Klarna is investigating stablecoin-enabled alternatives. In November last year, the enterprise announced its intention to introduce a dollar-pegged stablecoin on Stripe and Paradigm's Tempo blockchain to enable novel payment use cases.
